As Highland Park driveway sealcoating specialists, we want you to understand the products we use and why we use them. This page talks about our commitment to using effective and safe products in our Highland Park driveway sealings.
Coat tar sealant contains a highly toxic, carcinogenic group of chemicals: polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons or PAHs. Even the manufacturers of coat tar sealant admit that their product is extremely toxic. In addition, PAHs do not easily degrade, and they find their way into lakes close to areas where coal tar sealant is commonly used. In contrast, much lower levels of PAHs are found in the western part of the United States, where asphalt or petroleum-based sealants are commonly used. Officials have banned coal tar sealant in Highland Park and many surrounding suburbs. Home Depot and Lowe’s no longer sell coal tar sealant.
If coal tar sealant were released onto a site, it would be illegal and a violation of EPA regulations. Two decades ago manufacturers of coal tar sealant applied for and received an EPA exemption that allowed them to continue to produce the toxic sealant.
Fortunately, we have a viable alternative: Black Diamond sealant manufactured by Gemseal. It is comparable in price and effectiveness to coal tar sealant and has a much lower level of toxicity. Schell Sealcoating uses only Black Diamond sealant on commercial and residential Highland Park asphalt sealing jobs.
